Responsibilities This unique opportunity is part of the Additive
Manufacturing Center and Sheet Metal Fabrication Group, which
produces highly complex prototype and flight parts for JPL's
spacecraft missions. Some Challenges You Will Tackle: Evaluate the
hardware Design for Manufacturability (DFM) Performing
manufacturing engineering functions for the development of
mechanical hardware including planning, initiating and monitoring
activities. Collaborate with engineering design and analysis
sections to determine new and advanced welding technical
capabilities and equipment that the group should acquire. Provide
innovative welding solutions in support of design and fabrication
of flight hardware and mechanical group support equipment. Develop
weld processes/parameters for various weld processes used at JPL
(Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) manual and orbital welding
techniques, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc
Welding (GMAW), spot welding and brazing) Determine and administer
weld qualification samples for weld procedure and welder
performance qualifications based on code requirements. Maintain and
keep all weld procedures, welder's qualification records and
procedure qualifications records. Provide support for audits.
Participating in Make or Buy decisions, interface with outside
vendors for group work. Develop estimates for weldments and other
work for the Sheet Metal Group. Evaluate, improve and document the
sheet metal manufacturing process. Qualifications You Must Have:
Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering or similar with 3 years of related
experience, or M.S. degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering or similar with 1 years related experience, or a PhD
degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar
with 0 years of related experience. Possess an American Welding
Society certification as a Certified Weld Inspector or equivalent.
Extensive knowledge of materials, weld symbols and fabrication
drawings (GD & T). Knowledge and clear understanding of the
following weld processes: GTAW, SMAW, GMAW, spot welding and
brazing. Experience in welding and joining Aluminum-based alloys,
Titanium-based alloys, Nickel-based alloys, and Iron-based alloys
Experienced in interpreting and fabricating the following welding
codes: ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, AWS D1.2, AWS D1.6, AWS D17.1,
AWS D17.2 Experience in developing instructions and sequences for
welding repair and rework Proficient using CAD software (e.g.
SolidWorks, NX, and AutoCAD) to review and modify hardware designs.
Got These? Even Better: Minimum 5+ year prior industry experience
in a welding environment Highly energized, self-motivated, with the
ability to work on several assignments using considerable practical
judgement. Proven ability to take verbal and incomplete design
elements and recommending to engineering personnel solutions for
the manufacture and assembly of flight and prototype hardware.
Experience in welding additively manufactured hardware Excellent
verbal and written communication and be able to work independently
with minimal supervision. Innovative thinker with the ability to
present theories/concepts in a professional manner. Understand
National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program
(NADCAP) requirements. Proposal writing and publication experience.
