Lead Sr. Environmental Requirements Engineer with Security Clearance

Company: Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Jpl)
Location: Pasadena

Job Description:

New ideas are all around us, but only a few will change the world. That's our focus at JPL. We ask the biggest questions, then search the universe for answers-literally. We build upon ideas that have guided generations, then share our discoveries to inspire generations to come. Your mission-your opportunity-is to seek out the answers that bring us one step closer. If you're driven to discover, create, and inspire something that lasts a lifetime and beyond, you're ready for JPL. Located in Pasadena, California, JPL has a campus-like environment situated on 177 acres in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and offers a work environment unlike any other: we inspire passion, foster innovation, build collaboration, and reward excellence. Come join our team as the Lead Senior Environmental Requirements Engineer. This role is a part of the ERE Group (5134) of the Reliability Engineering and Mission Environmental Assurance Office (5130). As a project ERE you will lead a team of specialists in the fields of natural space, dynamics, thermal, and EMI/EMC (Electromagnetic Interference/Electromagnetic Compatibility) environments for spacecraft missions. You, with the help of your team, will be responsible for defining and overseeing the project's environmental design and verification program, from the black box level through the system level. You will play a key role in the achievement of mission success by assuring the environmental requirements are properly defined, documented and verified. Specifically, you and your team will define the relevant mission environments and specify the environmental design and verification requirements, including the appropriate margins to the anticipated environments. You will track progress and report status of the environmental verification program; identify, track, and manage risks while appropriately considering technical, cost and schedule constraints; and certify compliance of the program for launch. You will also participate in environmental testing and perform or review analyses for spacecraft environmental compatibility and reliability, as needed. You will report directly to the project Mission Assurance Manager, and collaborate with many factions of the project including the project manager, systems engineers, hardware design engineers and delivery managers, as well as external contractors and sponsors. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 9 years of related experience; Masters degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 7 years of related experience; or PhD in similar disciplines with a minimum of 5 years related experience. Technical proficiency and experience in environmental design and verification programs for space applications. Technical knowledge and experience in a broad range of environmental technical specialties, such as launch vehicle environments, dynamics and structural loads, thermal environments, EMC/EMI, magnetics, and natural space environments including particle radiation, meteoroid, orbital debris, UV, atomic oxygen, internal and external spacecraft charging effects and plasma interactions. Systems engineering, Mission Assurance, or related experience and leadership in the development of complex verification and validation programs for space missions. Experience in assembling and leading multidisciplinary teams to implement this type of program. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to implement the environmental assurance program with minimal line management oversight. AN ACTIVE TS/SCI SECURITY CLEARANCE IS REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION. Desired Qualifications: Expertise in some aspect of spacecraft mission environmental assurance (dynamic environments, thermal environments, natural space environments, EMC/EMI, etc.). Experience with JPL, NASA, MIL and/or industry practices and standards across a range of applications related to the environmental requirements definition, environmental testing standards, and testing effectiveness for different types of missions, including Earth orbiting and deep space missions. Hands-on experience in conducting/overseeing dynamics (acoustic, pyro shock, & vibration), thermal vacuum and/or EMC testing at various levels of integration, including at the black box and system levels. Proven ability and experience with cost estimation, managing financial accounts, preparing work agreements, technical risk assessment, and environments related Problem/Failure Reports resolution. Experience working with various organizations that are involved in flight hardware testing (test facilities, system safety, Quality Assurance). We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
