This unique opportunity is part of the Mechanical Systems
Engineering, Fabrication and Test Division which engages in
research, technology development, and the creation of advanced
mechanical, thermal, propulsion, and electronic packaging systems
with expertise that spans the full breath of mechanical disciplines
and is applied from architectural concept development through
operations.As the Structural Engineer you will be working for JPL's
Spacecraft Mechanical Engineering Section, which is responsible for
the architecture of mechanical engineering designs and solutions
that enable unprecedented missions and science acquisition. You
will work with a team that leads the development of mission
enabling technology and end-to-end mechanical systems for all JPL
projects and missions.
- Perform structural dynamic and loads analyses, multi-body
dynamic simulations, and modal testing for flight projects, study
tasks & proposals.
- Prepare and maintain structural dynamic requirements and
- Provide extensive dynamics engineering knowledge to projects
and interface with project personnel and contractors such as
project stress leads, system and cognizant engineers, dynamics &
control, and dynamic environments.
- Collaborate with other structural engineers and dynamists on
assigned projects and other team members to verify compliance with
requirements and customer expectations.
- Contribute to the team's performance including executing
technical work, budget and schedule.
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace
Engineering, Civil Engineering or related technical discipline with
typically a minimum of 9 years of related experience; Masters
degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 7 years of related
experience; or PhD in similar disciplines with a minimum of 5 years
- Wide-ranging experience and advanced knowledge in structural
dynamic analyses techniques including analytical techniques and
numerical simulation tools.
- Extensive knowledge of structural dynamics and static
equivalent loading as well as sine & random vibration analyses,
separation analyses & rigid body dynamic simulations.
- Extensive knowledge of Loads generation (launch, entry, touch
down, parachute, separation, etc) and generation of Craig-Bampton
and/or superelement model in conjunction with Coupled Load
- Extensive knowledge of verification requirements for structural
analyses combined with experience performing spacecraft level modal
and dynamic testing.
- Strong ability to work system tasks, and adept at communicating
with multiple interfaces.
- Proven ability to work in a team environment.
- Good communication (oral, written, presentation),
interpersonal, negotiation and organizational skills.
- Working knowledge of NASTRAN & Superelement, ADAMS, MATLAB,
PYTHON, FEMAP, LS-DYNA, and ABAQUS
- Experience in modal testing and pre & post analyses.
- Experience providing structural analysis, requirements
specification, and test support to space flight projects.
