Responsibilities

This unique opportunity is part of the Mechanical Systems Engineering, Fabrication and Test Division, which engages in research, technology development, and the creation of advanced mechanical, thermal, propulsion, and electronic packaging systems with expertise that spans the full breath of mechanical disciplines and is applied from architectural concept development through operations.

As a Mechanical Engineer III you will be working for JPL's Spacecraft Mechanical Engineering Section, which is responsible for the architecture of mechanical engineering designs and solutions that enable unprecedented missions and science acquisition. You will work with a team that leads the development of mission enabling technology and end-to-end mechanical systems for all JPL projects and missions.


  • Lead engineers and participate on teams in a collaborative environment to engineer, develop, and run configuration trades on the mechanical system of a project.
  • Apply engineering knowledge and experience to projects and interface with project personnel and contractors.
  • Collaborate with other project engineers to verify compliance with requirements and customer expectations.
  • Contribute to the team's performance including executing technical work, budget and schedule.
  • Work independently and under the direction of the group supervisor, project management, and technical leads.

    Qualifications

    You Must Have:

    • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 7 years of related experience; Master's degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 5 years of related experience; or PhD in similar disciplines with a minimum of 3 years related experience.
    • Wide-ranging experience and advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas: mechanical systems including structures, configuration, structural analysis, and integration & test.
    • Subject expertise in one or more mechanical engineering disciplines (structure dynamics, instrument accommodation, launch vehicle integration, composite design/analysis, computer aided design & manufacture, etc.).
    • Extensive understanding of fundamental engineering principles, theories and concepts with applications in solving mechanical engineering problems


      • perform trade studies
      • develop conceptual designs while performing preliminary structural analyses and loads evaluations
      • assist in the development of engineering requirements
      • provide engineering oversight to the fabrication, assembly, and qualification of spacecraft flight hardware


      • Proven ability to work in a team environment along with previous demonstrated experience leading and mentoring junior engineers.
      • Must be familiar with related analytical and engineering methods and be able to provide oversight and direction to the engineering and delivery process meeting critical design and delivery needs.
      • Excellent communication (oral, written, presentation), interpersonal, negotiation and organizational skills.

        • Project management experience in leading the scoping, costing, and scheduling of engineering products.
        • Knowledge of Laboratory policies and procedures, NASA policies and procedures, and government regulations across a range of applications.
        • Working knowledge of FEM and SEA analysis codes such as PATRAN, FEMAP, MSC/NASTRAN, SDRC/IDEAS, SYSNOISE, and VA One.
        • Modal analysis and testing experience.
        • Experience providing structural analysis, requirements specification, and test support to space flight projects.
        • Knowledge of structural dynamics and static equivalent loading as well as random vibration analyses, separation analyses & rigid body dynamic simulations
