Our client, NASA JPL is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to be a part of the Project team in Pasadena, CA. In this role you will be responsible in designing various mechanical assemblies. To be considered for this position you must have a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical engineering and have at least 6 years in Aerospace/Aviation related design. Must be a US Citizen or Permanent resident.

Position: Mechanical Engineer IV/ Structures and Mechanism

Pay Rate: $80+ DOE

Duration: 12 months or longer

Flexible work schedule: 9/80 or 5/40

SUMMARY

We are looking for a talented Structures and Mechanism Engineer to design various mechanical assemblies. As a Mechanical Engineer IV, you will design various subsystems, working closely with other members of an interdisciplinary team. This job requires enthusiasm, creativity, and attention to detail in order to develop unique, practical, and novel designs capable of achieving the mission objectives.

You will be working for the Payload and Small Spacecraft Mechanical Engineering Section (355), which is responsible for the structures, mechanisms, and mechanical systems engineering of payloads and small spacecraft across all phases of the mission lifecycle.

You will:

Serve as a Mechanical Engineer for a JPL flight project
Partner with other engineers to generate engineering requirements and specifications for mechanical systems
Design complex structures and mechanisms with challenging engineering requirements
Participate in concept development teams by introducing and infusing new approaches
Develop designs that must operate in extreme environments
Generate design review materials that document and validate your designs

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline with a minimum of 8 years of related experience; Master's degree or Ph.D. in a similar discipline
Knowledge and experience in mechanical engineering and systems engineering with expertise in mechatronics technology development or mechanical hardware design, development, integration, and test.
Ability to translate higher level requirements into electro-mechanical hardware configurations and development plans.
Ability to juggle and prioritize a number of tasks in order to meet commitments with high-quality products
Excellent communication skills and accountability working in a virtual environment

Desired Skills:

Experience in Mechatronics and Robotics Applications - Successful delivery/implementation of space flight actuators and mechanisms through full lifecycle: Requirements Derivation, Design, Analysis, Fabrication, Integration, and Testing
Mechanism Types: (linear, rotary, magnetic, hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, electrical)
Applications: Gimbals, Filter Wheels, Deployments, Robotic Arms, Hydraulic Fluid Loops,
Experience with design, analysis, procurement and Testing of
Electrical motors (DC Brushless, Stepper Motors, eddy current dampers)
Gear Train (harmonic drive, planetary drive, spur gear, helical gear, worm gear, friction drive)
Release devices and launch locks
Feedback sensors (encoders, resolvers, potentiometers, load cells, torque transducers, Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDTs), optical)
Motor Controllers
Bearings and Bushings
Experience with Qualification of Mechanisms
(Random Vibration, Sine Burst Testing, Thermal Vacuum Testing, Functional Testing, Shock Testing, EMI/EMC Testing, Life testing)
Familiarity with Specification AIAA S-114A-2020 "Moving Mechanical Assemblies"
Has led teams through successful gate reviews, PDR, CDR, TRR, MRR and Delivery
Has Mechanism Flight Hardware Integration and Testing Experience
Working in cleanrooms o Working with Flight Technicians and Quality Control
Developing, procuring and testing Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) and Data Acquisition (DAQ) for mechanism testing
Experience with detailed tolerance stackups for mechanisms
Experience Leading and interacting with Teams
Familiarity with NASA standards
Familiarity with JPL standards
Familiarity with Failure Analysis
