The Project Systems Engineering & Formulation group provides lifecycle leadership in the formulation, planning and execution of the project systems engineering function for JPL space flight missions from concept development through completion of post-Launch checkout and commissioning. Providing formulation services from concept ideation, to the full expression of that concept in formulation phase products, the creative and innovative personnel within this section are responsible for the leadership for project-wide systems engineering efforts, and the delivery of project-level systems engineering products. The section's expertise spans a wide variety of project systems engineering products and disciplines, including:

  • Project system and mission architectures
  • Project-level requirements

  • Project-level trade studies
  • Risk Management
  • Project Software Systems Engineering
  • End-to-End Information Systems Engineering
  • Exploration of very large mission-level trade spaces
  • Execution of coarse searches for feasible trajectories
  • Concurrent Engineering of point design solutions
  • System Model development and analysis

  • Identification and evaluation of advanced technologies
  • Leadership of systems engineering and production of formal proposals for both competed and assigned opportunities.

    ResponsibilitiesDo you have a passion for space exploration and project-level systems engineering? Are you a strategic leader and enjoy the challenge of mission development from formulation to implementation?

    We invite you to join JPL's Project Systems Engineering & Formulation team to serve as a Systems Engineer Level 4 for our Defense & Commercial Programs Systems Engineering Group.

    You will report administratively to the Technical Group Supervisor and programmatically to the Project Systems Engineer and be responsible for the development of the project system engineering products and leading program-level engineering trades.

    You must be a self-motivated individual who can work independently and in a team environment and be able to initiate and lead tasks across a spectrum of disciplines with government and non-government agencies.

    Tasks include:

    • Program risk management lead: identification, evaluation, & tracking of critical program risks
    • Verification and validation (V&V): coordination, planning, scheduling, and execution of program-level V&V activities
    • Interface definitions
    • Systems engineering analyses and assessments
    • Interacting with other teams to develop and apply systems engineering policies, practices, requirements, plans, and schedules.


      • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 9 years of related experience; Master's degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 7 years of related experience; or PhD in similar disciplines with a minimum of 5 years related experience.

      • Wide-ranging and advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas: systems engineering, aerospace engineering, and project systems engineering
      • Extensive understanding and application of principles, theories, concepts, and techniques used in system engineering
      • Significant understanding and wide application of advanced principles, theories, concepts and techniques in project systems engineering and concepts in systems engineering in space missions, resulting in contributions to the development of new theories and methods.
      • Ability to lead the activities of, and to synthesize the unique discipline knowledge of, a broad range of technical subject matter experts
      • Advanced knowledge of industry and/or academic practices and standards across a range of applications related to the systems engineering discipline, space mission operations, and non-NASA missions
      • Excellent problem solving skills
      • Ability to deal with multiple issues, tasks, and priorities concurrently
      • Experience with requirements development, system formulation and verification, and interface design for a project implementation
      • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
      • Availability for occasional domestic travel

        Must be a U.S. Citizen with an active Top Secret (TS) clearance based upon Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) within a 5 year scope and must be approved for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) accesses.

        Preferred Skills:

        • Thorough understanding of systems engineering methods and applications
        • Recent technical task management and systems engineering experience
        • Experience in all phases of the design, development, system integration, test and operation of spacecraft and/or scientific payloads
        • Experience with system and/or subsystem V&V
        • Demonstrated skills in leading a multidisciplinary, multi-organizational team
        • Ability to work on major project assignments without appreciable direction with accountability for technical performance
        • Significant understanding and wide application of advanced principles, theories, concepts and techniques in project systems engineering and concepts in systems engineering in space missions, resulting in contributions to the development of new theories and methods
        • Ability to deal with multiple issues, tasks, and priorities concurrently
        • Experience leading tasks and coordinating working groups on projects in system development, test, and/or operations
        • Ability to interact effectively across multiple disciplines with government and non-government agencies
        • Experience with development and delivery of system documentation, such as requirements documents, test plans, and design description documents
