Job Details

New ideas are all around us, but only a few will change the world. That's our focus at JPL. We ask the biggest questions, then search the universe for answers-literally. We build upon ideas that have guided generations, then share our discoveries to inspire generations to come. Your mission-your opportunity-is to seek out the answers that bring us one step closer. If you're driven to discover, create, and inspire something that lasts a lifetime and beyond, you're ready for JPL.

Located in Pasadena, California, JPL has a campus-like environment situated on 177 acres in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and offers a work environment unlike any other: we inspire passion, foster innovation, build collaboration, and reward excellence.

Responsibilities

JPL's Power and Sensor Systems Section provides end-to-end development of materials, devices, and hardware, provides capabilities, components, and systems for spacecraft and terrestrial power sources, energy storage devices, power electronics and power systems, and chemical, electrochemical, and conductive sensors. The Section maintains expertise in state of the art technologies over a wide variety of fields in power systems and sensor development.

The Section functions as the laboratory resource for the development and implementation of power technologies, flight power systems, and sensors. Its primary focus is to provide advanced development capabilities for spaceflight power systems, including solar arrays, thermal electric sources, energy storage (e.g., primary and secondary batteries), and fuel cell technology.

As a JPL Power Systems Engineer IV, you will architect power systems, define requirements, perform trade studies, lead teams of engineers, lead strategic planning for power system engineering, lead failure reviews, and collaborate with other members of the spacecraft team. As a Systems Engineer IV, you're highly motivated, creative, expert engineer with a focus on coordinating, balancing and integrating technical and program-related issues in an end-to-end manner to ensure that the total system satisfies the project's requirements. Senior systems engineers are involved in every phase of the mission life cycle including concept development, implementation, delivery, and operations. Responsibilities include leading trade studies, sizing major power system elements, handling cost and schedule, writing proposals, managing requirements, verification and validation, and analyzing mission specific power system performance.

As a member of the Power Systems Engineering Group you will design power systems for space and terrestrial applications. You will also:

  • be an authority in the development and tracking of requirements for one or more power system development efforts
  • lead power subsystem engineering effort on new mission proposals
  • build and maintain costs and schedules for flight project tasks
  • lead power subsystem design engineering teams to support technical design and performance trades, perform analyses, and provide recommendations
  • present complex power system concepts to different levels of line management, project management, and other technical personnel
  • represent the JPL Power System Engineering group at external organizations
  • support the flight system team to develop electrical interface and grounding requirements, electrical functions lists, and circuit data sheets

In this position, you will also be expected to:

    • lead system architecture and risk management analyses
    • perform complex and wide-ranging job functions and activities across multiple disciplines
    • work independently on key projects and tasks with only limited direction
    • provide team leadership by being accountable for team results on projects and assignments, including performance standards, budget and schedule

      Qualifications

      Required:

      • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline, with typically a minimum of 9 years of experience in Space Flight Systems, Avionics or Aerospace.
      • Master's degree in similar disciplines with typically a minimum of 7 years of related experience
      • PhD in similar disciplines with a minimum of 5 years related experience.

        Preferred Qualifications:

        • Advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas in Flight Systems: Analog Electronics, Controls, Power Systems Design, Systems Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Integration and Test
        • Deep understanding and wide application of advanced principles, theories, concepts and techniques in Space Flight Systems Engineering
